Wildflower Garden Ramblings

It is easy to focus solely on the weeds we find invading the parks. But it is worthwhile to look around when out weeding at our events and see what it is we are protecting.

During our March event we were looking for Bluebell Creeper and instead found a disturbing number of Acacia iteaphylla in the park.  We shall need to go back in a month or so, to get a positive identification on some of them as they were not showing their usual characteristics due to stress from lack of rain.

We also came across a flowering eucalypt.

It was photographed and an attempt was made at giving it a name.  iNaturalist gave several suggestions, but the closest fit seemed to be Eucalyptus odorata - the peppermint box.

Dean Nicolle has since confirmed this identification.

If you look at that reference, you will see this species had global attention as it is globally  rated as Endangered on the IUCN Red list. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/785613-Eucalyptus-odorata

Its flowering seasonality is about now, so March through to May is a good time to spot them.

Locally, the conservation status is rated as Near Threatened. FLB01 Seeds SA reference
