Site Description

Colonial Track Project is situated at the South Eastern corner of Morialta. Located on the south facing slopes of the riparian zone the project site follows Colonial Track from Gate 12 on Colonial Drive all the way to Third Falls track.

On the fringe of Morialta, it has areas of Stringybark heathland, South Australian blue gum grassy woodland and riparian zone habitat the length of Fourth Creek. The project is run as a collaboration between the Trail Running SA “Trail Care” team and the Friends of Black Hill and Morialta.

What this project protects

This project marks the edge of the Eucalyptus obliqua & baxteri (Stringybark) heathland within Morialta which is habitat for endangered southern brown bandicoot, chestnut-rumped heathwren and vulnerable yellow-tailed black cockatoo. As it transitions through grassy woodland habitat to the creek it contains stands of the rare tree violet (Melicytus dentatus).
The riparian zone is an important water source all year for creatures of all shapes and sizes.

Our Focus

Our bushcare focuses on restoring habitat by removing invasive weeds of concern that are out-competing our native species. These include muraltia, watsonia, broom, gorse and blackberry. Muraltia is of particular concern as an emerging weed found only in the upper reaches of Morialta.
Willow is also an important focus for this project as they change the structure of a waterway. This project is the top of Fourth Creek within the park and by ensuring the willows are kept in check here removes the spread of them the length of Fourth Creek. Located on the fringe of the park, our work in suppressing invasive weeds is important to protect habitat located deeper within the park.

How to get involved

Come out and join us for a habitat restoration event with the Trail Running SA “Trail care” team. Regular weekend events are scheduled throughout the year usually on a Sunday. Check out the upcoming events on our calendar.

Hi, my name is Hamish. I’m a hills resident and avid trail runner who as part of TRSA has been exploring more and more of our lovely trails. Sometimes it’s hard to run past a weed without wanting to pull it, so it’s great to slow down a little and make a small difference to a local patch of ground. Love learning about the ecology and history of our lovely hills too.

I'm Michelle and I joined FOBHM out of a desire to involve more trail runners and the Trail Running SA organisation in caring for and learning about the natural environments they use. Encouraging involvement and appreciation will hopefully result in generations of runners that are active in conservation and maintaining the beautiful parks around Adelaide. There is so much knowledge to be shared and the work is not only important, but fun and rewarding.
