Bandicoots

Southern Brown Bandicoot

The Bandicoots are an important part of our ecosystem within the park living in dense native vegetation and they are known to live in exotic dense vegetation such as Blackberry patches. They have a 30 centimetre long body with an average 11 centimetres long tail. Being found in NSW, VIC and SA including the Mt Lofty Ranges, Fleurieu Peninsula, Kangaroo Island and the South East. They feed on invertebrates, fungi and plant material.

The Bandicoots are found in Morialta near the old Bandicoot sanctuary across our key projects including Moore’s road, Pylon Track, Third Falls Track and Colonial Track. Our volunteers have completed 950 hours of habitat restoration in these areas. This includes patrolling the good bush for scattered weeds, follow up weeding, primary weeding and rubbish removal.

The Bandicoots will continue to be a priority and purpose of our works in the Eastern part of Morialta. They also make for an exciting encounter and are usually seen active at night time as well as in our cameras.
