Site Description

Olive Hill was the first project site establish by the Friends of Black Hill & Morialta. It is a primarily Eucalyptus porosa (black mallee box) and part Eucalyptus leucoxylon (South Australian blue gum) grassy woodland site. It is located up the first hill as you enter the park’s main entrance at the Southwestern side of Morialta.

What this project protects

This project site protects one of the few remaining black mallee box grassy woodlands and is the best example of its type in the park. The site protects a number of rated flora species: the mallee fringe-lily, the pale flax-lily and the clustered everlasting daisy. All of these species are considered rare.
It is habitat for a wide range of animals and woodland birds including western grey kangaroos, red-browed finch, red wattle birds, spotted pardalotes and echidnas.

Our Focus

Our goal for this project site is to restore it as a grassy woodland, that is corresponding to the existing large black mallee box overstorey. To restore the native woodland, we are targeting the large olive tree infestation across this hill and surrounds. Removing this weed gives the native species a chance to come back. Other weeds are growing in the site too such as the weed of national significance bridal creeper. We are also targeting escaped garden plants from the nearby houses such as succulents to minimize their spread through the park.

Hi, my name is Garth. Growing up in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, I was surrounded by the iconic Kosciuszko National park, which at the time I probably took for granted. I now realise that our natural places must be preserved and protected, as we are losing them around the world at a rate of knots. When we first came to Adelaide, we chose to live near the hills, and volunteering for the Friend's group was the perfect way to help restore, preserve and protect Adelaide's natural backyard.
